Donats Chorale is a community-based, mixed voice choir in the Vale of Glamorgan. We are looking for an inspirational Musical Director from September 2017 to replace Carl Grainger, our founding conductor, who is retiring from the post this Summer.
Founded in 2009, St Donats Chorale has grown to over 50 members who share the love of music, the joy of singing and the pleasure of good company. Members are not auditioned and not all read music, although there are enough experienced singers in each section to allow the choir to learn new music relatively quickly.
The choir has a wide and eclectic repertoire. Over the few years our concerts have included Bach’s St John Passion, the Vivaldi Gloria, Schubert’s G Major Mass, the Faure Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Handel’s Messiah and music by Britten, Taverner, Brahms, Stanford, Holst and Mendelssohn. We also perform a wide range of smaller pieces, ranging from madrigals and folk song arrangements to popular songs by Ivor Novello, Gershwin, Queen, Paul Simon etc.
The Musical Director will need extensive knowledge and experience of conducting a wide choral repertoire and the ability to inspire and coach the choir to realise its musical potential through enjoyable rehearsals and concerts. They will be responsible for:
•Working with the committee to plan the programme of concerts and other singing opportunities and advising on the choice of repertoire
•Selecting soloists and instrumentalists for concerts, working within budgets agreed by the committee
•Planning and leading rehearsals and performances
•Advising the librarian regarding scores and sheet music editions/publishers for chosen works
•Co-ordinating the production of programme notes including the collation of soloist biographies etc
•Attending committee meetings in an advisory capacity
•Giving an annual report at the Society’s AGM
In addition to concerts in Llantwit Major, Cowbridge and Barry, St Donats Chorale has sung at the Wales Millennium Centre, Bath Abbey and has toured to Norway. It rehearses from 7.30 to 9.30 on Monday evenings at Ysgol y Ddraig in Llantwit Major.
A professional accompanist/deputy conductor assists the Music Director. Remuneration, which is subject to negotiation, will be attractive.
Applications by letter and CV should reach the Choir Secretary, Mrs Anne Watson email@example.com not later than 10 April. Although not essential you are also welcome to send examples of compositions or arrangements for choir and/or links to any internet videos of your conducting.
Helping hands needed
The choir relies heavily on members and audiences to provide the funds necessary to develop and perform a wide-ranging repertoire to suit all tastes.
We are extremely grateful for the in-kind support received from Ysgol y Ddraig, but are always looking for new ways to sustain our on-going commitment to the development of our open ’no audition needed’ community choir .
Can you help? Whether you are a lover of music, or a local employer / business with a desire to support community-based activities – we’d love to hear from you.
To pledge your support either direct or in-kind – please contact Graham Price on firstname.lastname@example.org and we can discuss the mutual benefits of supporting community-based cultural activities.
